Liz Corney quit recorder club at age 6. But not before striking a deal: having found herself more taken by the piano that accompanied each class than the classes themselves, she asked her teacher if she could switch and take piano lessons instead. Mrs Dawe agreed, on the condition Liz joined the local church choir. Rather than practice her pieces, Liz began making up tunes and playing them to her teacher, who would listen and offer encouragement, while choir introduced her to harmony singing.
Liz’s own musical tastes were shaped by the tapes her parents played in the car; the stereo dominated by ABBA, The Carpenters, Queen – all brilliantly bombastic piano-led pop. Her mum’s Barbara Dickson, Carly Simon and Burt Bacharach cassettes enjoyed particularly heavy rotation.
These formative experiences coalesced in the 2000s when Liz began forming and performing in her own bands: the piano-power-pop trio Iceni, and alt-folk harmony group The Cornshed Sisters, with whom she has released two albums on Memphis Industries, while at the same time touring extensively playing keys with critically acclaimed label- mates Field Music.
Having written a suite of songs exploring themes of growing older, coming to terms with change, dealing with the challenges of communication in relationships, and driven by a desire to produce work reflecting her authentic voice, Liz started working on her first solo album co-produced by her Field Music band-mate David Brewis.
This new record, at once personal and universal – and deeply positive and uplifting – continues to parlay the timeless pop sensibilities heard in some of her early influences; compelling the listener to move, to feel good, to be open to finding the beauty in whatever situation they find themselves in, or even to find the courage to change it.
