The band was formed in late 1974 when Peterlee Town Council & Peterlee Development Corporation provided funds to buy a new set of instruments and a set of uniforms. The band was named Peterlee Town Band under Musical Director Gordon Kitto ( Snr ).In 1982 the band secured the services of Stan Macdonald as musical director a local man and very experienced brass band trainer and this was the catalyst for the band to progress. Over the years the band has worked its way upto the 1ST section and in2010 & 2011 were promoted to the Championship section which is the pinnacle of the brass band movement, however after 2 years the band found this standard very challenging and dropped back into the 1st section where we sit today. During the existence of the band the band have qualified for the national finals on seven occations. During the 1990s the band forged a sponsorship deal with the Gt Group of Companies, a local engineering firm and changed its name to GT Group Band Peterlee. In 2019 the Old Salvation Army building in Shotton Colliery was purchased as a permanent home for the band which should be a major factor in securing the long term future of the band.
GT Group Band Peterlee will be performing as part of the Sound of Sunday care home programme.
