As part of our vision of making BRASS a more inclusive and accessible festival, we put out a call for disabled artists to create new work for the festival, which was inspired by brass music. From this, we chose three exciting artists to create work for us. With restrictions as they are, we won’t be able to present these works until 2022, but we have short taster films highlighting their work.
From the unique perspective as a Deaf choreographer, Chisato explores brass music as an artform, examining its iconography, history and relationship to Durham. Through a period of research involving Durham’s museums and archives, interviews with local musicians and community, and by observing brass bands play and move, Chisato will generate a catalogue of material to inspire a piece of contemporary dance.
