In 1973 a young schoolteacher, David Jackson, decided to use his musical talent to start a brass band in Consett Junior School. As the children moved on to secondary school and beyond the band had to be renamed; firstly as Consett Junior Brass and then Consett Brass. The band, unlike most brass bands, has never competed and welcomes anyone who wants to play. Well known in the local area for its community spirited ethos the band regularly supports churches and other groups in fundraising events. There are currently over 30 players in the band which is led by only the second musical director – David’s son Marc – and there are 50 children playing in Consett Junior Brass.
Consett Brass will be performing as part of the Sound of Sunday care home programme.
